Australian University Games
The Victoria University of Wellington Flying Disc Club (VUWFDC) sent a team to last year's AUG, held in Surfer's Paradise in late September '07. This timing was poor for us, being the 3rd to last week of our academic year, although a holiday for the Aussies. This contributed to our club sending a team that included players from other NZ tertiary institutions, and players who had not competed at this level before. The team comprised of a majority of VUW students, with the addition of 3 players from International Pacific College (IPC) in Palmerston North, one Massey Palmerston student, and 3 Massey Wgtn students. There was a mixture of experience and newer players, national standard players and previously purely social players.
Getting there was hard. It required commitment, lots of fundraising, encouragement to prevent people dropping out, and actually putting the money down on the tickets. Add to that the passports, visas, and the not inconsiderable amount of paperwork for AUG. Quite an effort, well done those people! It must be said AUG were very accommodating towards us. A million sausages, and a few grants, later, and we were there!
Ultimate was held at Southport School, one of Queensland's most prestigious private schools, and it was truly a beautiful environment to spend the competetitive part of our visit. There were 20 teams in the draw, competing in 2 pools to reach the 1/4 finals. We were listed as Team NZ in the draw, although most teams correctly referred to us as Team Vic at the post-match cheers, as per our uniform logos. Pool play from Monday to Thursday saw the NZ team prove its merits, improving from their seeded 12th position to defeat all in their pool except the 2 teams seeded in the top 4.
The arduous competition schedule was matched by evenings of huge social activity. We were fortunate to stay at a backpackers very near the beach, within walking distance from downtown and the bus depot. Having to get up at 6am to be at the fields by 8am meant early to bed, but it was all quality not quantity! Many are the stories that will be told for some years to new players of the balmy evenings and sandy adventures, the new acquaintances and recreational interactions. Our discs really got around. I'm pleased to say we looked after each other well, sticking together almost the whole time.
1/4 finals time, Thursday afternoon saw us beaten by the top seeds from the other side of the pool. They deserved their victories, and we then looked forward to playing off for 5th-8th on the last day. Friday once again dawned with exceptional weather, and we played our games at the lower fields beside one of the main canals which permeate all of Surfers. A truly exquisitely beautiful venue, with the sun glinting off the water, skyscrapers in the background, a small breath of wind, trees for shade on the inland side; and ultimate to play! Did we rise to the challenge? Did the Aussie teams come out firing, ready to meet that challenge? Alas, we didn't have the firepower left, the long week's festivities were showing; while our oppositions showed their gameplans to be good. Valiant efforts by our players, but not enough. Final placing 8th. Followed by a multi-team dip in the canal. That was certainly enjoyed!
University of Queensland took out the final over MacQuarie Uni, last year's winners. Several of us had previously managed to (quite legally) acquire UQ playing tops. Great souvenir! For those who can work out what "UQ Ultimate Lovers AUG" actually means. Some of our players took part in the demo game before the final, which was pretty much a big mess. The rest of us just became a mess of our own accord.
In ultimate, teams give a "spirit" score to their opposition, and also name male and female MVPs. At the awards, each team is then informed of their top MVPs. Bathhurst won the spirit award for the competition, perhaps some consolation for their last placing. Soki from IPC was well deserving of his male MVP, being a truly excellent player, athlete, and sportsman. Newer player Anita was the surprise recipient of female MVP, giving her victory on and off the field. Go girl! Special mention also should be made of our captain and coach, John Fouhy, who was really valuable, level-headed and setting an excellent example all week.
A great result. 8th out of 20, and with a team of mixed skills that had never played together before. Everyone improved their skills, some hugely. And fitness, and health. Everyone made life-long friends. And ask anyone in the team - was it worth it? Absolutely, completely. 11 out of 10. Best thing most had done all year (some even said ever). We're going back!
Just to squeeze a bit more from the trip, a visit to Dreamworld the next day ensured everyone had the pants scared off them, with, amongst other rides and rollercoasters, the Tower of Terror, and - dare I think of it again - The Claw!!! Talk about scream!
Next year? Absolutely. Possibly Melbourne. Hopefully an NZ Universities rep team, and a VUW team. Wouldn't miss it. Nor should you!
